Pumpkin Kids: Boy

pkidsfront

I've made a couple of pumpkin kids. As I find time, I may add more. For now, there's a boy and girl - this tutorial is for the little boy. If you'd like to do the girl, you'll find that turorial here.

For this tutorial, you will need the following:

Paint Shop Pro. I used version 7.04 but if you are familiar with PSP, you should be able to convert the tutorial without problems. You can download the latest PSP version demo here.

My selection files. Place these in your PSP selections folder (or another location of your choice). You may download them here.

My color chart. Right click on this and save it to your computer.

Step 1. Open a new image 350 x 350, white background. Copy your color chart and paste it as a new layer onto your canvas. Move it to the top out of the way. When you need a color, just click on it with your eye dropper tool.

Step 2. Add a new layer. Load selection 1 (go to selections>load from disk - then navigate to the location where you placed the selection files. Flood fill with color #1.

Float the selection (go to selections>float; OR, hit the "Ctrl+F" keys on your keyboard). Appy a cutout using the settings in the screenshot. Then repeat the cutout but change the horizontal and vertical to -3.

Step 2. Add a new layer. Load selection 2. Flood fill with color #2.

Float the selection (selections>float). Apply a cutout using same settings as above, except change the shadow color to #736C35

Apply weave preset (effects>texture effects>weave), using the settings in the screenshot.

Step 3. Add a new layer. Load selection 3 (shirt). Flood fill with white. Float (selections>float). Apply cutout, same as before - shadow color is #DBD7D7. Keep selected.

Step 4. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to #3 and background to null. Choose your draw tool, single line, size 5, antialias checked. Draw some stripes on the shirt. Don't worry about them going over the edges, you'll fix that in a minute.

Now to fix the overlap. Invert the selection (selections>invert). Make the shirt stripes layer active. Hit the delete key on your keyboard, and the overlap should be gone.

Step 5. Add a new layer. Load selection 4. Flood fill with color #2. Float. Apply cutout, using same settings as in step 2 above.

Step 6. Choose your magic wand and click inside the eyes, nose, and mouth. Expand the selection by 6 (go to selections>modify>expand). Add a new layer and place it underneath the head. Flood fill the eyes and nose with color #4. Flood fill the mouth with black.

Step 7. Add a new layer and place it underneath the head layer but on top of the yellow/black layer you just did. Set your foreground color to white and background to null. Choose your draw tool, single line, size 9. Draw some teeth as you like.

Step 8.Add a new layer, and place it on top of the head layer. Set your foreground color to black, background to null. Choose your airbrush, using settings in the screenshot. Draw some lines down your face similar to mine.

Step 9. Add a new layer. Load selection 5. Flood fill with color #5. Float. Apply a cutout, using same settings as before (shadow color is #2D4733).

Choose your airbrush, same settings as before, and draw some lines on your leaf similar to mine.

Step 10. Add a new layer and place it underneath the head layer. Load selection 6. Flood fill with color #6. Float. Apply cutout, same settings as before, except shadow color is #7D462B.

Step 11. Add a new layer. Place it underneath the head layer. Set foreground and background colors to #7. Choose your draw tool, single line, size 9. Draw a couple of suspenders. Float. Apply cutout, using black as the shadow color.

Step 12. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to #7 and background to #3. Choose your preset shapes tool, ellipse, line width 3. Draw a circle for the button. Apply an inner bevel using the settings in the screenshot

Duplicate this layer and place it on top of the other suspender.

Step 13. And that's it. When you're satisfied with your creation, delete the color chart and background layers, then merge visible layers. Save as a psp file.

Hope you've enjoyed making this lil guy ;o)
