Pracken's Paint Shop Pro Tutorials

Quick Ghost

ghostfront

I'm continuing my Halloween series of tutorials. This one's a quick an easy ghost. Now don't get scared, she's really very friendly ;o).

For this tutorial, you will need the following:

Paint Shop Pro. I used version 7.04 but if you are familiar with PSP, you should be able to convert the tutorial without problems. You can download the latest PSP version demo here.

My selection file. Place this in your PSP selections folder (or another location of your choice). You may download it here.

My color chart. Right click on this and save it to your computer.

Optional: Sparkle tubes. You can find a nice selection of sparkles here or here.

Step 1. Open a new image 150 x 275, black background. Copy your color chart and paste it as a new layer onto your canvas. Move it to the top out of the way. When you need a color, just click on it with your eye dropper tool.

Step 2. Add a new layer. Load selection 1 (go to selections>load from disk - then navigate to the location where you placed the selection files. Flood fill with color #1. Keep selected.

Float the selection (selectons>float; or "Ctrl=F"). You'll see marching ants around it. Apply a cutout using settings in the screenshot. Keep selected (keep selected until I tell you to deselect - you're doing this so the colors you'll be adding will stay inside the lines of your ghost).

Step 3. Add a new layer. Set your foreground to color #2 and background to #3 (to make it easier to alternate between the two colors).

Choose your airbrush, using the settings in the screenshot. Spray on lines of colors 2 and 3, similar to mine. Then spray on white in the centers of some of the lines.

Step 4. Choose your retouch tool (it's the little hand), smudge brush, and use the settings in the screenshot. Smudge the colors around a bit to soften (use an up/down motion). Feel free to adjust the brush size up or down as you need to (larger sizes will give me more area and softer smudge). Also, feel free to add more color if you need to. Smudging isn't an exact science, and your results will not look exactly like mine. Just play with it until you have something you like. Deselect.

Step 5. Your ghost is basically done. I decided to add sparkles to mine. To do that, add a new layer and place it underneath your ghost. Choose your picture tube tool and navigate to the sparkle tube of your choice. Adjust the size downward as necessary. Then just draw the sparkles downward from her garment.

Step 6. When satisfied with your ghost, delete the color chart and background layers, and merge visible layers. Save as a psp file.

And that's all there is to it. Your ghost is ready for spooking!
