To do this tutorial, I assme that you have a basic understanding of PSP and its tools. The tutorial uses preset shapes and it involves a bit of shading, and I provide screenshots to guide you along the way.
My preset shapes. Place these in your PSP preset shapes folder. You may download them here. My color chart. Right click on this and save it to your computer.
Step 1. Open a new image 400 x 400, white background. Copy your color chart and paste it as a new layer onto your canvas. Move it to the top out of the way. When you need a color, just click on it with your eye dropper tool. Step 2. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to color #1 and your background to color #2. Choose your preset shapes tool and navigate to the "pracken_ff5" preset shape. Check "retain style." Draw a flower in about the center of your canvas, approximately 150 x 150 (watch the numbers in the lower left of your screen). Note: All screenshots are reduced in size, yours will be larger.
Step 3. Choose your selection tool and draw all around your flower, then click on it. You'll see marching ants around the flower (you're doing this so you can add some shading and it won't go outside the edges).
Step 4. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to color #3. Choose your airbrush, and use the settings in the screenshot. Spray some color, similar to mine.
Step 5. Choose your retouch tool, smudge brush, and use the settings in the screenshot. Smudge the color around just a bit to soften.
Step 6. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to #1 and your background to null. Choose your draw tool, single line, using the settings in the screenshot. Draw a straight line similar to mine.
Step 7. Set your foreground and background colors to #1. Choose your preset shapes tool, ellipse. Draw a small circle on the end (hold your shift key down while drawing to make it perfectly round). Draw another circle on the other end.
Step 8. Now you'll just duplicate this layer and rotate it as many times as you want. Your lines will probably be uneven, and that's fine - that's what you want. Here's how mine looked when done.
![]() Step 9. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to color #4. Choose your airbrush, same settings as before, and spray a little color in the center of your flower.
![]() Step 10. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to color #5. Choose your airbrush again and spray some more color in the center.
Your first flower is finished. It should look something similar to this.
When you're satisfied with your creation, hide the color chart and the background layer, then merge visible layers (name it flower 1). Hide this layer and turn your background and color chart back on. Step 11. Now to make your second flower. Add a new layer. Set your foreground and background colors to color #1. Choose your preset shapes tool and navigate to the "pracken_ff5-2" preset. Draw a shape on your canvas, approximately 125 x 125.
Step 12. Choose your selection tool and draw around the flower and click on it to select (you'll see marching ants around it). Now add a new layer. Set your foreground color to color #3. Choose your airbrush (same settings as before) and spray some color similar to mine.
Step 13. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to color #4. Spray some color in the center. Set your foreground color to color #5. Spray some more in the center (change your brush size down to about 5).
You should have something similar to this.
When you're satisfied with the flower, hide the color chart and background layers, then merge visible layers. Name this layer flower 2. Turn flower 2 layer off and turn the color chart and background layers back on. Step 14. Now to make the 3rd flower. Set your foreground color to color #2 and your background to color #5. Choose your preset shapes tool and use the same flower shape as above in step 11. Draw a shape approximately 125 x 125.
Choose your selection tool, draw around the flower, then click inside to select it (you'll see marching ants). Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to color #1. Choose your airbrush and spray some color on the ends of the petals and in the center. Change your foreground color to color #5 and spray some color in the center. When done, you should have something similar to this.
When satisfied, hide the color chart and your background layer, then merge visible layers. Name this flower 3. Turn your color chart and background layer back on. Step 15. Add a new layer and make another flower. Set your foreground color to #2 and your background to #4. Draw a flower. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to #5. Choose your airbrush and spray some color in the center and on the ends of the petals. Then spray a little of color #4 in the very center.
When you're satisfied with your creation, hide the color chart and the background, and merge visible layers. Name this flower 3. Turn your color chart and background layers back on. Step 16. Now to make a leaf. Set your foreground color to #4 and your background to #6. Choose your preset shapes tool and navigate to the "pracken_ff5leaf" preset. Draw a shape approximately 70 x 100.
Choose your selection tool and draw around the leaf, then gently click inside it to select (you'll see marching ants around it). Set your foreground color to #4 and your background color to null. Choose your draw tool, freehand line, size 2 and draw some lines on your leaf, similar to mine.
Add a new layer and place it underneath the lines you just drew. Set your foreground color to #7. Spray some color similar to mine.
When satisfied with your creation, hide the color chart and background layer. Merge visible layers, and name it leaf. Turn the leaf layer off and your color chart and background layers back on. Step 17. Now to make the second leaf. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to #4 and your background to #7. Choose your preset shapes tool and navigate to the "pracken_ff5leaf2" preset. Draw a shape approximately 40 x 45. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to #4 and your background to null. Choose your draw tool, freehand line, size 2. Draw some lines on your leaf similar to mine. Add a new layer. Place it underneath the lines you just drew. Set your foreground color to #7. Choose your airbrush and spray some color similar to mine. When done, you should have something similar to this.
When satisified, hide your color chart and background, and merge visible layers. Name the merged layer leaf 2. Now you're ready to assemble your pieces into a composition that you like. Make all layers visible. Move the flowers and leaves around until you have something that pleases you. You can make more copies if you wish, resize, just be creative. I added some tendrils to mine - if you wish to do that, add a new layer and place it on the bottom (on top of your background layer but underneath everything else). Set your foreground color to color #6 and your background to null. Choose your draw tool, freehand line, size 2. Draw the tendrils wherever you want them. I then added some leaves to the ends (just use leaf #2 and resize it down), but you could also draw flower buds or just leave them plain if you wish. And that's it, all done!
I hope you've had as much fun doing this tutorial as I did. And as always, if you run into any difficulty, just let me know.
