Dollhouse Series
Bedroom: Trunk

dhbedroomfront

Welcome to my dollhouse series tutorials! This is the bedroom section of tutorials.

This tutorial is for the trunk (it's there in front, beside the chair). All of the other items in the bedroom can be found on the main dollhouse tutorial page, which you will find here. If you haven't already done so, please go there and orient yourself to the dollhouse tutorials, and for important information you'll need to complete the series.

Once you complete the bedroom, and all the other rooms, you'll assemble them all into the completed dollhouse.

Please read my Terms of Use before completing these tutorials.

This tutorial was written for Paint Shop Pro versions 9 and 7.04

For this tutorial, you will need the following:

Paint Shop Pro. I used version 9, and have made comments as appropriate for PSP 7 users. I didn't test it in PSP8, but you shoud be able to complete the tutorial in that version as well. You may download the latest PSP version demo here.

My selections. These are in PSP 7 format, so they will work with both PSP 7 and PSP 9. Place them in your PSP selections folder. You may download them here.

My color chart. Copy this and save to your computer.

Step 1. Open a new image 200 x 200, white background. Copy the color chart and paste it as a new layer. Move to the top of your canvas, out of the way. When you need a color, just click on it with your eye dropper tool.

Step 2. Add a new layer. Load selection 1 (selection>load/save selection>load selection from disk). [PSP 7 users: selections>load from disk].

Flood fill with black. Contract by 1 (selections>modify>contract). Flood fill with color #2.

Step 2. Repeat Step 2 for selection 2.

Step 3. Add a new layer. Load selection 3. Flood fill with color #2,

Step 4. Add a new layer. Load selection 4. Flood fill with color #3. Contract by 1. Flood fill with color #4.

Repeat Step 4 for selections 5, 6, and 7.

Step 6. Make the layer with selection 1 on it active (the one you did in step 1 above, the green side). Select and float it (selections>select all>selections>float) - you'll see the marquee around it ("marching ants"). You're going to spray on some color and you're doing this so it won't go outside the edges.

Add a new layer. Select your airbrush and use the settings in the screenshot.

Spray some of color #5 around the edges.

Choose your retouch tool>smudge brush, using the settings in the screenshot.

Now just soften the colors out a bit.

Step 7. Repeat Step 6 for the end piece of your trunk.

Step 8. Repeat Step 6 for the top of your trunk, except change the color you use to #1.

Step 9. Add a new layer and place it on top of of the other layers. Set your foreground to a gold gradient of your choice (one comes with PSP). Set it to linear, angle 90, repeats 0. Set your background to null.

Choose your pen tool>draw freehand, and use the settings in the screenshot. [PSP 7 users: draw tool>single line].

On the end of your trunk, draw a small curved line for the handle.

Set both foreground and background fills to the gold gradient (same settings as before). Choose your preset shapes tool>circle, using settings in the screenshot.

Draw a small circle. Duplicate it (right click on the layer on your layers palette>duplicate), and move it to the other side.

Step 10. Delete your color chart and background layers. Merge visible layers. Save as a psp file.

What to do next

Now continue on through the bedroom tutorials, in order (go here to find the tutorials index, and scroll down to the bedroom section to find the others). Once you have all of the items in the bedroom section complete, then go here to assemble it.

Have fun!
