Pracken's Paint Shop Pro Tutorials

Valentine Bear

I'm working on my 2006 Valentine's Day tutorials. This one's a really easy one. It involves selections, a little drawing, and some shading.

For this tutorial, you will need the following:

Paint Shop Pro.This tutorial was written for versions 10 (PSP X), 9 and 7.04. You may download the latest PSP version demo here.

My PSP canvas with alpha channels.

My preset rose shape and my preset bow shape. Place these in whatever folder you have your PSP presets.

My gradient. Place this in your PSP gradients folder.

You may download all of my materials here.

You'll also need this color chart. Right click and save it to your computer.

Step 1. Open up the bearlove canvas you downloaded. Copy the color chart and paste it as a new layer onto your canvas. Move to the top, out of the way. When you need a color, just click on it with your dropper tool.

The canvas has all the selections you'll need for this tutorial, all saved to alpha channel, and are in the order you'll need to load them. To load a selection from alpha channel, go to Selections>Load/Save Selections>Load Selection from Alpha Channel. [Note: PSP 7 users: go to selections>load from alpha channel.

Click on the box on the left (circled in red in the screenshot) and navigate to the selection you want. Then click "load."

.

To choose a selection, just click on the box to the left (it's circled in red in the screenshot) and navigate to the selection you want. It'll show up in the preview window on the right. Then just click "Load."

Step 2. Add a new layer. Load selection 1 from alpha channel. Flood fill with color #1. Contract the selection by 1 (selections>modify>contract). Flood fill with color #2.

Float the selection (Selections>float; or hit the "Ctrl+F" keys on your keyboard. You'll see the marquee ("marching ants") around your selection.

Apply a cutout (effects>3d effects>cutout), using settings in the screenshot. The shadow color is color #1 - right click on the shadow color box, and you'll see it in the list of recent colors there.

Repeat the cutout, but change the horizontal and vertical to -2. Keep selected.

Step 3. Add a new layer. Set foreground to color #3. Choose your airbrush, using settings in the screenshot. Spray some color around the bottom of the feet.

Choose your smudge brush, using settings in the screenshot and soften the color out a bit.

Step 13. Add a new layer. Set foreground to color #6, background to color #7. Choose your pen tool>draw freehand. Draw some hair. When you start drawing, don't pick your pen up until finished - that way you'll have a nice closed shape.

Now choose your airbrush again, changing the width down to about 2-3. Spray on some lines, starting from the center and working outward. I've used a colors 1, 2, and 6.

Step 14. Add a new layer and place in underneath the top arm. Choose your preset shapes tool and navigate to the "pracken_rose" shape you downloaded. Make sure "retain style" and "antialias" are both checked. Draw a rose. Duplicate the layer and arrange the second rose as you wish.

Step 15. Add a new layer and place it underneath all of your bear layers. Set foreground to color #8, background to #9. Choose your preset shapes tool>heart. Draw a heart. Selection and float the heart (selections>select all>selections>float). Apply a cutout using same settings as before (shadow color is color #8).

Step 16. Add a new layer. Choose your preset shapes tool again and navigate to the "pracken_bow" shape. Set your foreground color to black and your background to the "pracken_cathat" gradient you downloaded. Draw a bow at the top of your heart. Use your deformation tool to turn its angle if you wish.

Add a new layer. Choose your preset shapes tool>rectangle. Change the angle on your gradient to 0. Draw a small stripe for your heart. Use your deformation tool to rotate it. Copy it (edit>copy) and paste as a new selection (edit>paste as new selection), alonside it.

Now to get rid of the overlap. Make the layer with the heart on it active. Select and float it (selections>select all>selections>float). Now invert the selection (selections>invert).

Make the layer with the stripes on it active. Hit the delete key on your keyboard. The overlap should be gone.

Step 17. Delete the color chart and background layers. Merge visible layers and save as psp file.

And that's it, your little Valentine bear is all done. Hope you've enjoyed the tut!
