Party Animals: Cat

PAcatfront

This little cat is one of a series of party animal tutorials. I made her for New Year's but she can party any other time of the year as well. I also decided to make some friends for her, so they can all party together. These little guys really know how to party on!

I drew all of these tutorials from scratch, but I have made selections for you to use. There is a bit of shading and simple drawing involved in this tutorial, but I've provided a lot of screenshots to guide you through. I assume that you have a basic working knowledge of PSP.

For this tutorial, you will need the following:

Paint Shop Pro. I used version 7.04 but if you are familiar with PSP, you should be able to convert the tutorial without problems. You can download the latest PSP version demo here.

My selection files. Place them in your PSP selections folder (or any location of your choice - just remember where you place them). You can download them here.

My seamless fabric tiles (or you may use your own if you wish).

My gradient.

My confetti PSP file. You can download my materials here.

Step 1. Open up a new image 350 x 400, background color of your choice.

Step 2. Add a new layer. Load selection 1 (go to selections>load from disk - then navigate to where you placed your selection files and open up file the 01 selection. Food fill with #9D8871.

Step 3. Apply a cutout (go to effects>3d effects>cutout), and use these settings. (Note: for each of the brown layers, you'll use these same cutout settings).

Apply a cutout with the same settings as before except uncheck the "fill interior with color" box. (Note: for each of the layers that use the fabric fills, you will apply this same cutout).

Step 19. (This step is optional). Set your foreground/background colors to pink #FFC0FF. Add a new layer. Choose your preset shapes tool, ellipse, line size 1. Draw a small circle about 15 x 15 pixels (watch the numbers at the lower left of your screen). If you have Eye Candy, apply the jiggle preset, with the following settings:

Step 20. (This step is optional). Add a new layer (move it underneath the last layer) Set your foreground color to pink #FFC0FF and your background color to #9D9ED6. Choose your draw tool, freehand line. Draw some lines down from the circle on top of the hat (draw them with a bit of a squiggle so both colors will show).

Step 21. Add a new layer. Choose your draw tool, freehand line. Set your foreground color to black and your background color to null. Draw lines on the feet and arms similar to mine.

Step 22. Now we'll add some personality to her face . Add a new layer. Set your foreground and background colors to black. Choose your preset shape tool and draw a small circle for the eye. Contract by 2 and flood fill with green #22BC26 (or color of your choice). Repeat this step for the other eye.

Step 23. Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to black and background color to null. Choose your freehand draw tool, size 1. Draw some lines, similar to mine. I added a little pink to the nose.

22cat

Step 24. (This step is optional). I added just a little shading to her dress. If you want to do that, set your foreground color to a darker purple (I chose #5F6DBF). Add a new layer. Choose your airbrush and use the following settings to spray on some color, similar to mine.

Step 25. Choose your retouch tool, smudge brush, set to the following settings. Smudge and smooth the colors out to look something similar to this.

25cat"   26cat"

If you want to add any additonal shading, just follow the same procedure as above. You'll choose a darker color to spray around the outside and anywhere inside where a shadow might be, then smudge it around as above. (I added a little shading to my face as well, but that's optional).

Step 26. Make one of the ear layers active. Add a new layer. Choose your airbrush, same settings as before. Set your foreground color to pink #FFC0FF. Spray a little color inside the ear and then use your smudge brush (same settings as above) to smudge the color around a bit. Repeat this process for the other ear.

27cat

Step 27. You're now basically done with the cat. I decided to add some confetti. I've included my confetti psp file in the materials you downloaded. If you want to add some, just copy and paste as a new layer. Resize by about 40%. Move the layer on top of your background layer but underneath all the other layers. Then duplicate and rotate as many times as you wish. Once you have something you like, hide all layers except the confetti layers. Then merge visible. I then lowered the opacity of this layer to about 35. I also added a few pieces of confetti at the top (just select a piece out with your selection tool and paste as new layer).

And that's it, all done! I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial, and please let me know if you experience any problems.
